As someone with asthma I've tried to use that as an excuse if the need ever arose.
The response I've gotten: "You're MORE at risk of covid and dying if you have asthma!"
My response back: "I DID have covid, back in December, it didn't affect my breathing at all, I wasn't wheezing or hacking at all. I never once had to go to the hospital, I was fine. You know what DID affect my asthma? Bronchitis for 5 straight weeks 5 years ago. Emergency room 4 times, nearly choked to death in my sleep, and I had a deep, harsh, mucous-y cough for those 5 full weeks. I wanted to die I was in so much pain. But covid? I had a stuffy nose and was tired and that's it! I'd rather get covid 10 times over getting bronchitis again."
Their response: "Well, okay, but you have to wear a mask regardless! You have to protect others!"
My response: "Getting covid twice is less than 0.5%. So far I've not even gotten so much as a cold after getting covid. I'm not going to infect anyone with something I don't have."
Their response: "It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, follow the science, rEeEeeEEe!!!!"
My response: Facepalm And then I leave and don't bother coming back.
Every state I know of that has a mask mandate has disabilities as an exemption. Asthma is a officially designated as a disability by federal law (ADA).
I carry two pieces of paper when going out in public maskless, 1 copy of my states mandate which states the disability exemption (highlighted) and 2 a copy of the ADA addition of Asthma as a recognized disability. If someone really wanted to go to the mat with me on whether I have asthma, then I also have a copy of my inhaler prescription but also inform them that they will be sued for asking me to show it to them.
