Egypt doesn't let US Military ships go through the Suez Canal for free, and there's been some hubbub about the US not wanting to pay seeing how they aren't there for trade and won't be making any money in order to pay for passage.
The one heading north was most definitely IN the Great Bitter Lake. The USS Eisenhower came a fair distance to get into the Mediterranean, headed straight for the Suez, and stopped tracking. Did it actually go into the Suez? Dunno - it's an aircraft carrier so it doesn't actually need water for access to anything nearby.
