I've referred to it as human farming population control for over ten years.. At one point the continents were basically rough outlines of plantations. Then wars and takeovers, and Shadowrun-esque multinational "corporations" took over as government. The dollar is debt, and many other currencies are linked to it.. FRNs are Company money, when you earn them, save them, or spend them you have certain rules to follow, or else. Tennessee Ernie Ford's song, 16-tons details this very thing, and is about working your whole life and getting nothing in return.
