I think the first vaccine probably saved a lot of lives. Those lives might have been saved by modern sanitation, but at the time the smallpox vaccine was probably a great thing.
I think having vaccines as a tool is a good thing. The potential for something really nasty is real, even if it is manufactured (perhaps especially).
However, I also think we will need to take an honest look at when vaccines are actually helpful. It may be that sanitation and diet are all we really need for the vast majority of contagions we have used vaccines for.
