His ‘victims’ were also his willing accomplices. They lost their wealth because of their greed and lack of due diligence, and were conspirators. I’m not victim blaming, or excusing his behavior, but a life in prison, forced to reconcile your conscience with what you had done, is preferable justice to an execution in this case IMO.

Madoff had used his sterling reputation on Wall Street to gain the trust necessary to lure his victims into buying into his Ponzi scheme. He would have never been able to pull it off had he not had the reputation. I believe at the beginning of his career he just didn’t have the heart to book losses for his clients, and it probably would have ended his career early. So one lie just led to another, building on each other a massive structure that inevitably collapsed. Similar to Fauci in many ways.
