It appears he was a wealthy sheltered brat who never had any problems of any kind.
He isn't even particularly bright. His mom worked with IBM and she asked them to give Billy boy a leg up as a favor to her.
He was clearly inserted into the computer scene to play a role in the technocrat master plan.
The whole young billionaire genius thing is a lie; a persona.
