You're right. It also shows they don't know how to experience the alive feelings of love and joy. If they did, they wouldn't be interested in the fear feelings.
Fear is more exhilarating and visceral and available. Love and Joy are more nuanced, require effort and investment and are more elusive.
Current social structure makes them even more so, by design.
I think most of them aren't actually scared, it just makes their life feel more important to be going through a "pandemic" and they larp actual fear.
