In a way that is the best way to approach it. Yes, it is infuriating, but that gives them a one up to misdirect others - don't pay attention to him, he's just mad because he didn't get his way. By laughing and mocking, it shows scorn - rightfully - that you are onto their little game and the misdirection won't work.
