I'm more in favor of the possibility they simply grafted reptile DNA onto themselves through gene therapy for regenerative properties. (Think tail regeneration)

The whole alien/sub-terrainian 4ft reptilian body snatchers thing seems too sci-fi nonsense for my liking.
