It’s a legal deterrent, not protection. It makes state agents more worthy in the eyes of the law than ‘lesser’ civilians. Don’t kill the armed and trained agent because we value them more but kill the (often) unarmed and untrained civilian instead.
How many drunk drivers are you forced to deal with a day? How many domestic violence situations do you deal with daily? How many armed robberies do you run to?

Or you can do drug interdiction, or forensic work on fraud worth millions or billions. Border Patrol, or track down escaped Felons

Are there people worth more than the man on the street? Family, of course. But in general, NO.
Besides, you might ask the family of the man on the street if his life is worth less than the police officer.
