To be honest it's possible it wasn't actually a hack but more of a phish attack.
The media is now calling it ransomware. Those usually spread in vectors like email attachments or something that is downloaded and executed.(ie. some one clicks something w/o checking then the computer gets infected).
Hacking is different. Someone doesn't get "hacked" because they downloaded a virus. (It might lead to a hack down the road) It's a convient cover all term though for being technologically illiterate.
