The advent of social media paired with smartphone tech has seriously fucked with younger folks social behavior.

Same as you, but not on a bus... I've witnessed the devolution of social interaction and spurring of social anxiety in the work place for over a decade.

I've witnessed it firsthand. Im a horribly socially awkward 23 yr old (albeit much more successful than most of my peers) but i never developed social skills cause i never really had to. The even younger generations have it even worse than I did.
