If there's striking lightning within a 10 mi radius of the control tower airports will start preliminary OP Ban procedures, so no running ground equipment but aircraft can still land and take off. I agree with your sentiment. However, it is important to remember that all of the various reeeeeeeing and outrage is vastly over represented by the media and pushed by companies.
