It's actually ovulation that gets messed up by stress-illness and drugs. Once you ovulate you will get your period based on your Normal luteal day count which can range from 10 days to 16 days with 12-14 being the normal average. But that countdown doesn't start till ovulation and that is what gets messed up. Abnormal length of bleeding or breakthrough bleeding is slightly different and can be caused by hormonal imbalance which is usually determined again in the days leading up to ovulation if the hormonal cycle isn't functioning right.
It's more like women synch up their ovulation cycles in order to compete for males at the same time for procreation and competition
