I mean the Airforce has apparently already built and flew the prototype for the F-35s replacement. Not that they said much more then that.

The F-35 also fell short of preforming how it was marketed. It was Marketed as excelling at ground attack, strategic bombing, and as a Fighter. Reality was it at best was average in those roles.
