At one level the candidate gets blindfolded and walked to an imaginary pit* where they bash him unconscious with a blow to the forehead. This causes his etheric "spirit" to leave his body and he becomes enlightened. Instantaneous astral projection.

*He doesn't know it's imaginary. He is terrified that he will be tossed into it.
