When my mom was a young woman, she was hit by a drunk driver. Her neck was fractured and she died, was resuscitated, and slipped into a coma. Her fam was told to plan her funeral.
Two nurses came in to change her sheets and when they rolled her little body to one side she slid off the bed to the floor... and screamed. The noise scared the daylights out of everyone in earshot.
She didn't recognize her parents, or know her name. But she knew she had met Jesus on the bank of a beautiful flowing river. And she wanted- more than anything in the entire world- to board a shining boat with the others ahead. She wasn't scared or hurt. She knew the answers to all her questions before she could ask them. She felt loved. But she had only taken a single step when she knew this ship was not here for her.
Her recovery was long and slow. A quiet guy she had dated twice in the past kept coming around. She re-learned to walk. Then run. Finished college and married the quiet guy. She had me and my sister. She taught geology, and earth science, CPR, and hunter safety, and girl's baseball. And if you ask her, she can tell you all about how she met Jesus. She's never waivered. Never stuttered. Never changed a word. To her it's a fact. The sun shines. Rain is wet. And God loves you.
