Also, in the past there were specific ways boys and men would express their masculinity (wrestling, getting the big kill on the hunt, etc.). Many of those methods have been removed by modern life, and I believe many boys and men turn to porn, video games, alcohol, etc. as a way to express their masculinity. I say this as a dude who once was addicted to video games.
I admit, I can't wait to go back to video games (raising a strong willed puppy is basically a full time job that doesn't end on weekends or 5 o'clock as it turns out) but as I get older and see the games that are coming out, I am more appreciative of slower burn games.
I am a personal fan of the trucking sims (American Truck, Eurotruck, and to a lesser extent Snowrunner) as well as Elite Dangerous because they take time to get things done, and I don't have to rush to get them done. I can go at my own pace and relax. Other games have their place, but I find I can't do games like CoD for longer periods of time anymore because I don't even get those dopamine hits anymore, since I can see just how ridiculous it has gotten.
You are likely on to something about expressing our masculinity through porn use though. It's true that hunting is prevented in many areas, restricted in others and socially looked down upon in others still.
For other stuff, well... From the start, what makes us unique is pretty much destroyed now. This current generation is growing up / grew up with participation trophies for everything they did. They aren't encouraged to stand up and make an effort to let their unique skills / talent / work ethics shine anymore. That has to have a lasting effect on their psyche.
We are so worried about being accused of X/Y/Z that we don't say anything potentially offensive, which has a two-fold effect in that it makes people more callous towards the subject of offense, and it makes people fear saying something stupid and having a learning experience.
A lot of time gets substituted for things like porn or drug use, and then to top it all off, boys are told they can't be masculine, girls are getting a very twisted and contradicting series of expectations and privileges foisted upon them.
Socially, the world is in a really fucked up place. When you can't even tell a woman she's beautiful or pretty without someone -- often not even the one you're saying it to -- getting offended and causing problems.
