The CCP ordered a mass extermination program on sparrows in the 50s and 60s based on the emotional assertions of the rulers, not, like, you know, facts. They thought in a dim-witted caveman shortsightedness that sparrows were eating all the harvest. (Spoiler alert- no.) As a result, massive ecological disruption occurred causing far greater agricultural failure. Who to blame? The farmers who were ordered to kill sparrows of course. Never the unquestionable leaders, above reproach with a neo-mandate of heaven.
Forcing couples to have only one baby has caused catastrophic cultural damage to Chinese society, for example, eliminating whole categories of family like cousins, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters. An incredible burden on one child to care for both his parents plus the parents of his future spouse, not to mention all grandparents. Looking forward, a bleak future with a hugely skewed gender imbalance, resulting in rampant human trafficking for sex and forced marriages.
Actually the plethora of social ills directly resulting from an excruciatingly narrow-viewed decision all in the name of controlling population growth can hardly be catalogued. The family is absolutely the foundation of all societies. With a crippled, aborted family structure, Chinese society is lethally condemned to ultimate collapse. Btw it’s not such “slow motion.” It’s progressing at a startling pace, why else would they come out with this now? Desperation. “Allowing” couples to have two, three, five babies at this point is woefully too late. Most couples are hardwired with the custom of one baby, indeed they can scarcely afford even one.
The CCP is the disease. The malignancy must be removed so the people can heal.
My personal note- be fruitful and multiply. Do not be dissuaded from having a baby because of the uncertain current situation. Boldly commit your ultimate act of defiance against the [evil] who wishes to see us depopulated!! Have babies in abundance!!! They are a blessing from God. Do not delay.
I should mention that a lot of people in China of childbearing age are unmarried and will likely marry beyond 30, perhaps 40. If they marry at all. Many married couples with one baby are already too old to have a second, plus haven’t had adequate planning of resources to support it.
Tragically this describes the situation in Taiwan too, another super-aged society. Deaths outnumbered births last year for the first time. It’s heartbreaking. Other workaholic societies like Japan have the same situation. The system is rigged. Resist. I’m doing my part ^_^
in the other two, it was an informed decision. in "one child" china, the ultrasound machine in every village made sure that only men were born--something that seemed like such a good idea until we wanted to send soldiers to war, and families whose only retirement plan was that one man started looking at the govt askance. which brings us to the only real fear of any chinese government through the years...
Parents are exhausted and barely can have strength for one. Two is amazing. Three is rare.
People typically marry late, 30+. It’s not a recent phenomenon as in the west, this has been happening a while. The older you are, the harder to have/raise kids. (Believe me.)

What's their excuse? They haven't had a stupid one child policy.
As I said, the system is rigged. Long work hours with inadequate income. https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3785553
