I think this happens because, one the developers are heavily subsidized. The CCP thinks that having a bunch of really tall buildings makes them a superpower in and of itself, and two, they have little understanding of how the market works. They don't do market research to find out where people want to live and what services and stores they want when they get there.

Yeah, that's what I'm reading in the MSM. Still, I can't help but think of the Ghost Cities when I consider the idea of mass displacement in China.
