Democracy would mean the President would be selected by a simple majority of votes, or mob rule, which is why the Left wants to abolish the electoral college.
A republic has checks and balances to prevent a mob from taking control to the detriment of the country as a whole.
My thinking was that democrats want people to believe we're a democracy so that people who don't follow politics much and don't know much about the founding of our country will then think:
"United States is a democracy. United States is good therefore democracy is good. Now I've got to vote for someone. Democrat or Republican? We're a democracy so I guess that means I should vote for a democrat."
Since January 20th, 2021 we have been seeing mob rule democracy hard at work with Head of State biden being the blithering idiot in charge of the biggest clusterfuck in our history. Democracy like this is one heartbeat away from totalitarian control; thank God it is just a movie...

This era was a big left turn in America IMHO. Set aside all the USA hoopla and our success in Europe and Japan. The left came out of the woodwork as well. We are living the product of that now.
