My thinking was that democrats want people to believe we're a democracy so that people who don't follow politics much and don't know much about the founding of our country will then think:

"United States is a democracy. United States is good therefore democracy is good. Now I've got to vote for someone. Democrat or Republican? We're a democracy so I guess that means I should vote for a democrat."
