Why are special chemicals needed anyway? Couldn't people be injected with high doses of morphine and muscle relaxant?

Yes, but you want to be sure the person dies and you don't end up with some brain-dead person in a coma. I can imagine the screaming over killing a poor disabled prisoner. You would hope your prisoner on death row for 18 years would not have any tolerance for street drugs, but they might. They don't need to be injected either.

It makes no sense but there have been "botched" executions in every method.
