I think its more about how many people believe the number to be way higher than it actually is, it could even be as low as half that amount as we are missing many of the records and personal accounts make up some of that number, but these are things so far in the past and so ingrained into just about every persons knowledge into that event it may honestly do more harm than good to research and correct the number

I personally believe the number is inflated but to what degree we will never know and it should simply be left at that
