I took the Oath in the early 70s, it still applies, I still consider myself bound by it. The one I took is different from the one Pepe posted here, mine was upon enlistment and we also swore to obey lawful orders from command authority and to disobey unlawful orders. That part of the Oath meant more to us than the rest, disobeying unlawful orders, because we understood that was all that kept tyranny at bay.
Anyhow, one takes the Oath because one desires America, because one desires to be the answer to the problem, because one loves God and desires a Peaceful Society. Our Constitution has proven to be the best instrument of government ever devised by Mankind, it works when a moral Society protects it.
