“On the weekend of Mother's Day, Kevin, Bill and Simone coordinated to bring her home for a surprise visit to be with Valerie for Mother's Day. She stayed the next day and shared in my birthday party. She returned to school on Tuesday and began to feel poorly. By the weekend, she was having tachycardia (fast heart rate) and was taken to the ER. She was diagnosed with Viral Myocarditis and placed on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine for life support.

When her heart was not able to recover, she was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and placed on the national heart transplant list.
