Looks like the Hindu deity depicted is Shiva The Destroyer. One part of the Hindu Trinity with Brahma and Vishnu.

It's wikilinks, but this info is spot on. And you'll notice a ton of similarities and conveni ences as to why this guy, and [them] use th Hindu gods and practices to control the masses.
