Many people have no clue that decency was not only encouraged but required by law in many colonies and states. Some of the shit we say and take for granted every day would be a violation 250 years ago.
Just because “freedom of speech” was a thing it didn’t mean you were free to say any disrespectful thing you wanted. And moreover, there were actual fines and penalties for crossing any one of many decency laws.
Vulgarity is protected speech. Sometimes, vulgarity is required to shock the audience so that they understand the import of the message.
