You are correct. The thing is, the Alexa device openly listens to everything you say. It's in the terms of service that it literally records every bit of audio and sends it to Amazon's servers, even if you arent giving it a command

I'm fully aware that amazon devices are always listening which is why I don't keep them on 24/7. Also, you can trigger an Alexa response without a physical device using the mobile app.
