I hate to say this because I am catholic. When Pope 'rescues' migrants, he does not take them into the Vatican, the country he rules. He dumps them on Italy. No one can seek asylum in the Vatican, but are referred to Rome.

Unlike Pope Pius XII who smuggled Jews from ghettos disguised as priests and nuns and housed them in the Vatican until they could be smuggled out to safety.
