The longer he holds them, the deeper he digs his own resting place. It's unimaginable at this point that he (or any of his ilk) could possibly be holding out for the win. Artificial intelligence wouldn't much care about their own impending doom, and reptilians have no limbic systems that would make them display emotion about it.

It's just that there's no escape for them, and you wouldn't know that by how they conduct themselves.
