These people could have connected the dots on their own. Forget the idea of deception, manipulation, and having others tell them the "truth". Taking ten minutes to consider the consequences of your actions is all it would take to come to the conclusion that the risk outweighs any benefits.

The information was presented to them, and they chose to skip their homework. They took the easy road and relinquished their autonomy to a third party.
