I see from link that media was very unscrupulous back in that day too!

Says just after the murder, reporters from Hearst paper call Short's mother and reported that she had won a beauty contest. Then after that got all the information about Short, from her mother, they told her her daughter was murdered. That pretty slimy way to get a mother to talk about her daughter.
