During the civil war, acts of desertion were punished by hanging. There were quite a few hangings and they were somewhat demoralizing to have to witness your fellow soldiers being hung, So they began branding them with a D on their face for deserter instead. Not sure about the results and effectiveness of discouraging desertion, might be interesting if it was ever studied, but a peculiar lesson in history all the same.
