Yes signals exist, I believe they are done at appropriate times, not continually in every day situations. Use a little Discernment.

Masons have also done all they can over years to get their symbols mainstream, so many of us emulate these signs without meaning to. You are correct, a consistency needs to be applied and looked at over time- one sign doth not make the mason..
