Why would you want to be immortal? Imagine all the evils ever perpetrated on you continued through perpetuity. If you were a dishwasher or a servant you would always be that. If people were immortal there would be no upward social mobility. Maimed and injured? You would always be in agony and pain. Are you a pariah and despised by your community? You would remain ostracized for eternity. Prometheus may be a god and a friend to mankind but ask him what eons of serpents' venom feels like.
