So, this is very interesting OP. For sure. I'm not super familiar with the account and it's real time history as it unfolded, but I get the gist of it. Interesting timing to say the least.

I had a shower thought the other day: I wonder if Rusty Shackleford from KOTH has any relation to John Shackleton, Antarctic explorer. It's a stretch, but putting it out there.
