My guess is that every one of them either hired an attorney or accepted a public defender to represent them.
The first thing a defense attorney (especially public defender) will do is waive your rights. Once you have an attorney represent you, you have given up your ability to do almost anything, including demanding a speedy trial, with just a few exceptions (like verbally acknowledging a plea of guilty).
Attorneys are officers of the court, and their first duty is to the court, NOT to you.
