I've told people exactly that, who have asked for money (cashiers at the grocery checkout for instance, some sort of Cancer Society fundraiser or whatnot), and I just get the deer in the headlights stare. BUT.... maybe somewhere down the line, it may trigger them into thinking about it again. Most people will just give the money, or say "sorry... not today." and no-one ever thinks twice about it. Plant the seeds.
