Not necessarily, it could return information about a future where it gave that same information. Such a system probably converges faster too if the answers it gives are probabilistic.
Yeah, perhaps it could be that future time reports "bake in" all actions taken and doesn't veer from it despite actions trying to change it. That things are predestined and any attempts at changing it will fail. Interesting concept though, not covered from Sci-Fi very often (if at all).
It seems like we will be able to send messages back in time long before we could send physical objects. Maybe we have a team of people sending messages back from alternate futures.
