My Italian mom has been saying “things come in threes” as long as I can remember. But she usually was referring to bad things. So if two bad things happen in a day we think and look for the third bad thing “ah it was when you stubbed your toe!” so then you’ve gotten your third thing out of the way and the rest of the day will be ok.
It's also an expression that's used in England. "Bad things come in threes."
