I don't think the problem is the lie itself. Of-course the lie is justified as you explained with the hayloft analogy. I think the problem is that the lie will just kick the can down the road. I can understand the survival tactic when you are just buying time until the Allies arrive, but what if you are the last stand and nobody is coming to save you?
