I've been looking for somewhere to move for a while now. So far narrowed it down to Tennessee or Texas, but in my research, I found out Oklahoma has a bunch of mountains in the eastern half of the state. Since I'm a sucker for mountain views, I've decided to look into it a bit more. I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty much ignorant about Oklahoma. All I know is it has the second highest population of Indians, it's super religious (a big plus), and there's lots of modern cowboys and tornados.
So figured I'd ask some fellow patriots what it's like and see if it's a nice place to live. From what research I've done so far, it LOOKS freaking beautiful when you're in the mountainous parts.
Like, actual North Texas or is this some kind of in joke about Oklahoma being "North" Texas?
Don't come to North Texas, it's WAY too damn crowded now. We now have major traffic during the entire weekend just like LA. The drivers are now terrible and dangerous (I've personally seen 4 cars this year alone stop on the highway and go in reverse because they missed their exit....I shit you not.) And good luck finding any type of home for under $350k, even with a ton of work needed.
This area is no longer Texas to me. It doesn't feel like my home any longer. I've even spoke to some of the Cali transplants here through work, and are moving out because it's too much like Cali and not cheap like people have told them it would be.
I'm born and raised in this area, and all the changes me and my wife have seen over the last 5 years is having us look to move out of this suburban nightmare. It's too damn packed and expensive and the California transition is well in progress. Don't get me started on property tax...the last 4 years ours have gone up the max 10% cap...every single year. Homes are still going for $50k+ over asking to top it off.
We just closed on a vacation home in Oklahoma on Lake Texoma. Property tax is next to nothing, and the living expense is much lower than Texas. We plan on either moving out of the Texas burbs to some acreage, or completely out, and to OK. The east side is beautiful like you said. The Ouachita National Forest runs through this area and is a great getaway location.
Lifelong Texan.... lived in Ntx since 2000. Contemplating OK or TN myself.
