Been that way for a long time I surmise.
I read this book David Livingstone 1916. Livingstone was quite a fellow. His enduring strength, his faith was amazing. He persisted through trails I don't think I could have endured, but a lot of men of old had that character. Almost all the tribes, kings etc had a high level of respect for DL, and he never abused their kindness.
At times I was left thinking, how can a person treat another person with such callous brutality. The slave trade was going strong by the early to mid 1800's, but I was a bit surprised to read that competing African tribes were doing most of the rounding up of slaves by raiding the villages of other tribes. Sure if the incentive had not been created by the slave traders, there may have been less human trafficking, but there are multiple stories in the book where one tribe attacks a market place, or village, and slaughters everyone, men, women, children. This people treated each other less than human, and had no problem rounding up woman and kids, and putting them in neck yokes to be marched off to slavery.
