Soweto is South West Township. During the Apartheid (racial segregation) era various black nationalities/tribes were "given" their own place to live. Guess the townships just continued.
They are peacefully protesting "their" ex-president (who was by all accounts a complete loon) being arrested.
700 Dead(EDIT this number is in serious dispute = some say 70, others say in the thousands. Police are running out of ammunition so the bullets must be somewhere) as of yesterday (officially admitted by the police, probably much higher, we may eventually get an honest number out of the government)
