I doubt doctors have experienced this kind of politicization of their science before. While politics in the medical field is nothing new, most has been over payment for treatments and allocation of treatment services. Not on the validity of specific treatment regimens themselves. They probably are not always sure what to do about it.
Antarctic exploration is a favorite topic of mine. Read of the Heroic Age explorers and of Admiral Byrd's work. Fascinating stuff. They explored not for personal gain or glory. They rarely named features after themselves or even family. (Others would often later rename their discoveries after them.) They explored for the sake of exploration and knowledge, and often considered the welfare of their fellow men ahead of their own. I know about the "conspiracy" aspects sometimes attributed to Antarctica, but the place is interesting even without all that.
