How is Wisconsin linked to the Finger Lakes region of New York?
Another connection with Finger Lakes is FLDS, Joseph Smith and the Second Great Awakening.
The Mormons split around the time. Most think they went to Utah, but a huge number were in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. Look into Strangite and the Voree plates. Voree and Burlington are near Racine and Paul Ryan’s hometown of Janesville. Mitt Romney chose Paul for many reasons, and one is the interfaith alliance. Mitt was named after his father’s cousin, the quarterback of the Racine Legion - one of the first NFL teams that is now the Arizona Cardinals.
I just discovered the link between Finger Lakes and Racine goes back as far as the Mound Builders. When the Mound Builders were driven out of their homeland in the Racine, Wisconsin area, they retreated to the Seneca Falls area in New York. The were pursued and massacred there after losing a major battle. They finally retreated to the Northern Kentucky area before they were wiped out once and for all. These events are the basis of the Book of Mormon.
There are additional connections to Arizona and Maricopa County.
This must be why there is a "Racine Street" next to the Mormon Temple in Arizona.
“I must remark that whatever be the legitimate inference drawn from similar works and remains in other places, concerning the state of civilization attained by the Mound Builders, the evidence here [he had been exploring in the vicinity of Racine] goes to prove that they were an extremely barbarous people, in no respect superior to most of the savage tribes of modern Indians.” — Dr. P. R. Hoy: quoted by Lapham, 10.
A stake is a Mormon satellite city. The United Order of the Stake of Zion appears to be an attempt by Joseph Smith and other church elders in Kirtland to avoid paying their debts. They dissolved the original United Firm and established two orders, one of them being the United Order of the Stake of Zion.
They intended to pay their debts by going to Salem and breaking into a house they "thought was abandoned" and stealing "treasure", although it doesn't appear that they were able to identify the right house to break into.
Searching the term "Stake of Zion" brings me to this article about Doctrines and Covenants 111 (666?), which is interestingly about witchcraft and "ancient inhabitants", although the ancient inhabitants in this case appear to be puritans from Salem instead of truly ancient people like mound builders.
James J. Strang submitted a positive report to Joseph Smith three months later that the Burlington area would be an excellent place for the Mormons to congregate. On June 18, 1844, Joseph Smith replied to James J. Strang’s letter with the appointment of the Burlington area as a Stake of Zion to be named Voree and appointed Strang to be his successor. This letter arrived at Burlington on July 9, 1844, after his angelic ordination, James J. Strang immediately told acquaintances of his ordination and likewise showed the Letter of Appointment to numerous individuals.
James J. Strang was the only person following the death of Joseph Smith to claim that Joseph appointed him to be his successor in the prophetic office.
