Bale is a weird guy. His mom was a circus performer. He was supposedly molested by Steven Spielberg when he was young. Spielberg "discovered" him.

He was just 13, with no drama training, when he was plucked by Steven Spielberg from 4,000 hopefuls to star as a boy in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in the 1987 epic Empire Of The Sun

I don't know how reliable this website is, but it talks about Spielberg, Bale, Crispin Glover.
