We had one go off about 3 miles from my house when I was a kid. It sounded like a bomb went off. It shook the ground and windows in my house. Seemed like everyone called 911 and most the reports were a plane crashed (my dad was a fire fighter and we had a scanner in the house and listened when it first happened).

It burned for almost 2 days and it was a 10" underground pipe. It caused nonrepairable damage to 2 farms that were within 100 yards of it.
