The "smart" thermastats (NEST) that they were putting in people's houses were found to have a hidden embedded microphone. After it was discovered google announced that they had voice activation technology released for it!
Most of these smart devices are just spying devices. Do yourself a favor and pay a little less for a nonsmart off brand TV not from China (and realize it will still probably spy on you).
I remember being horrified as my friends in California told me that the smart meters allow the Utility companies to shut down certain appliances in their home to conserve energy. During brownouts they utility company can turn off your AC and leave you only your appliances. I asked why doesn't she just install a window unit, but she shrugged and didn't know how to do that.
She gushed (as she boiled alive in her home) that it was really awesome they could do that since it meant her fridge and TV could stay on. The smart meters let them choose what appliances you can run and how much electricity you can have.
I couldn't believe the brainwashed people I know in California think this is AWESOME and NECESSARY to let the government turn off your appliances.
PG&E put a “smart” meter (has and electric on my house and I told them to take them off and put the analog meters back on. They did but I gad to pay in install fee and I’m paying an additional $10/month for the analog electric and gas meters. Well worth it IMO.
Remember that when you elect to have power supplied to your house, you're 'subscribing' to a service from a regulated but money-making utility; they're just trying to make a buck and they are managing some MAJOR infrastructure and a large labor base.
Bottom line: smart meters allow even further control of your consumption of power by the "powers" that be. They (the meters) may be inconvenient but they may also help avoid brown-outs and major system failures. Nefarious? Only so long as we allow them to be.
Our laws these days will allow "them" to get away with a great deal more currently (pun intended), than in other times. Your "elected" representatives may have more to do with acceptable subscription outcomes than your meter-reader. Still, the subscription is less expensive and more convenient than many other power supply methods. But remember when you subscribe, "they" control the supply.
At what price convenience? At what price independence? Your call.
When they first came out with them there were reports of them catching house on fire or transmitting something that messes up a pacemaker. The fact that the electric companies were so secretive, wouldnt notify you they were switching out the meters and wouldnt answer questions about it made me not to trust them.
